have you got a shopping problem?

How serious is your shopping habit?

If you think you might have a problem that’s getting out of control, these questions will help you decide whether you need further advice or help.

Answer the 6 questions below to find out how serious your shopping habit really is.

Question 1.
Have your friends or family ever expressed worries about your spending?

Question 2.
Do you often feel the need to shop to cheer yourself up?

Question 3.
Do you regularly spend more than you intended to?

Question 4.
Do you often find that your spending gets out of control and that you can’t stop once you’ve started?

Question 5.
Does going shopping often lead to feelings of guilt and shame?

Question 6.
Are you spending more than you can afford on a regular basis?

If you answered YES to 3 or more of these questions then you may be getting into deep water as far as spending is concerned.

Here are a few tips to tackle the problem:

  • Ask yourself why you are using shopping for emotional comfort or release. Perhaps there’s an underlying vacuum in your life that needs addressing? Are you in the wrong job or the wrong relationship? It may be time to tackle the problem or look for help.

  • Seek out other activities that can give you a buzz and really uplift you but that don’t involve spending money. Learn a new skill, take up a new hobby or change your routine so that shopping is no longer your ‘default’ activity. Aim not to have more, but to be more.

  • Enlist the help of others. Confide in a close friend or relative and ask them to work out a recovery plan with you. Once you’ve brought your problem out into the open you’ll find it’s much easier to deal with.
